Holiday program reduces crime over summer

With limited activities for young people in Bourke over the hot summer months, community members have consistently observed a sharp increase in youth offending during the summer period each year. This summer was different.

This year a partnership was formed between  the NSW Department of Family and Community Services, Maranguka, Bourke Shire Council and Youth Off The Streets to run a Summer Holiday Program – and the results have been extremely promising. The rates of malicious damage and domestic violence in Bourke were the lowest they have been in five years.
