Professor Chris Cunneen

Professor Chris Cunneen is a Champion of Just Reinvest NSW and a Professor of Criminology with the University of Technology Sydney. “We need to ask ourselves, how many more generations of Aboriginal young people will be taken away from their families and communities, locked away in institutions and propelled into life courses of poor education, high unemployment and social dislocation?” said Professor Cunneen. “Justice reinvestment offers us an opportunity to think differently and to act differently in the way we approach crime and marginalisation. Rather than more of the same failed policies, it provides us with a chance to shift resources into community development and rehabilitation strategies with positive outcomes. For too long governments have been prepared to throw money at destructive polices that reproduce criminal offending and fail to reduce recidivism. Do we really want to live in a society where, for example, Aboriginal young men are more likely to be found locked in a prison cell, than sitting in a university class room? Justice reinvestment offers a different path for political and community leaders who are insightful and fearless enough to envision better social outcomes.”

Professor Chris Cunneen is a Professor of Criminology with the Jumbunna Institute for Indigenous Education and Research, University of Technology and the Former Chief Investigator with the Australian Justice Reinvestment Project.
